We have enjoyed sharing this incredible location with families for 6 years now and are continually blown away by the feedback they leave and the amount of families who now return every year.
Come stay in a unique and secluded cabin just minutes from The Great Sand Dunes National Park. Located in a gated community with private access (via a short hike) to the incredible Zapata Falls, this cabin offers amazing mountain views from a wrap-around deck and second floor balcony. Watch the sunrise over Mt. Blanca; considered sacred to many Native American tribes, and set over the San Juans to the west and the largest alpine valley in the world.
The Great Sand Dunes National Park is only 5 minutes away and offers days of enjoyment playing on the sands of the highest dunes in North America and getting cooled off in the lifeblood of the dunes - Medano Creek. You will not likely find a vacation rental that is closer. Beat the heat and lines at the gate by visiting the park first thing in the morning. Return to the cabin for lunch out on the deck while plotting the next dune to climb with a pair of binoculars and all the unobstructed views you need. Return to the dunes for those amazing sunset shots and stay until after dark to view the stars with clarity like few places on earth (TGSD received the distinction as an International Dark Sky Park in 2019). Then pack the tired kids in the car and be back at the cabin in under 10 minutes.
Wherever you decide to stay, be aware that Highway 150 is really the only way to get into the park or visit Zapata Falls. There are lots of rentals that have listing saying they are 18 miles away (as the crow flies) but that can still be an hour of drive time. Consider asking for an address and check Google Directions before booking if proximity to the dunes is a priority.
The Great Sand Dunes Pool is a mere 20 minutes to the west by the little town of Hooper. If the weather is cool or rainy, spend the day in the warm natural hot springs of the must-visit pool that is open year-round. If an active outdoor vacation in a truly unique setting is your goal, then this cabin is for you.
The cabin itself is situated on a very private acre and a half with a seasonal stream running just beyond the wrap-around deck. It features two comfortable bedrooms, both with queen-sized beds and walk-in closets. There is also a second floor with a futon for additional sleepers. Be aware that the stairs are rather steep and may be a challenge to elderly guests. The fully-equipped kitchen comes with all the appliances, cookware, and utensils you will need. There is also a gas grill on the deck to fulfill your grilling needs.
Because of the cabin's privacy and seclusion, there is no high speed Internet in this part of the San Luis Valley but cell reception has increased significantly the past few years. We have hundreds of movies at your disposal to watch on the 2 flat-screen TVs and a radio to pick up the local stations. The sound system also features Bluetooth connectivity to pair with your phone. However, when you're enjoying the views of The Great Sand Dunes framed by the jagged peaks of the Sangre de Cristo mountain range, you will probably prefer to just unplug and connect with nature.
Please note: This property is not ideal for multi-family stays. Also, water is a precious resource in the valley - there is no laundry facilities on site. The closest laundromat is 15 miles to the south in the town of Blanca.
