Saxon Switzerland
Just beyond the gates of Dresden in the direction of the CSR border, you will be surprised by one of Germany's most unique natural beauties: the wild and romantic rocky world of the Elbe Sandstone Mountains, large parts of which have been declared a national park, where bizarre rock needles, reefs and deep gorges alternate with wide plateaus, large, quiet forests and lovely valleys topped by table mountains. Embedded in pure nature: the Elbe, on which the oldest paddle steamer fleet in the world operates, and many a cosy little town. 1200 km of hiking trails await leisurely and demanding nature lovers - in a dense variety that is second to none, from walking trails to via ferratas. Around 14,000 (fourteen thousand!) climbing routes from easy to extremely difficult lead to 1,100 free-standing peaks - we wish you all the best!

Unusual rock formations,
breathtaking views and the Elbe as a constant point of orientation: that is Saxon Switzerland. The part of the Elbe Sandstone Mountains belonging to the Free State of Saxony is known as Saxon Switzerland. Immediately adjacent are the Lusatian Highlands and the Ore Mountains, and if you leave Saxon Switzerland in the direction of the Czech Republic, you will reach Bohemian Switzerland. The name Saxon Switzerland was created by two genuine Swiss people, Adrian Zingg and Anton Graff. With this name, the two artists honoured the beauty of the region and drew a direct comparison to their homeland. The rest was then done by the well-known writer Wilhelm Lebrecht Grözinger, who made Saxon Switzerland famous throughout Europe with his books. In addition to the sometimes bizarre-looking geological formations, it is above all the numerous castles that characterise Saxon Switzerland. One of the centrepieces is Königstein Fortress, one of the largest and most important mountain fortresses in Europe, which towers 240 metres above the Elbe. Apart from this unique complex, however, there are a number of other castles, most of which can only be found in ruins. Nevertheless, it was the Romantics who were enchanted by the charm of the castles and the landscape and made Saxon Switzerland one of the most popular tourist regions in Germany at the beginning of the 19th century. Painters and composers alike let themselves be kissed by the muse on the slopes above the Elbe, and a number of important works were created in the Saxon Switzerland region, and although not much of the spirit of Romanticism has been preserved today, Saxon Switzerland has lost none of its special charm. Rock climbing and the occasional overnight stay in the open air are particularly popular with tourists. However, there is also a dense network of inviting hotels, holiday flats, holiday homes and restaurants and an abundance of sights that have left a lasting impression on Saxon Switzerland.
